A modern farm is only as reliable as its water circulation system. Before a single drop reaches the emitter, it travels through a hierarchy of polyethylene pipes: from the pump house, through buried mains, into submains, and finally out to the lateral lines along the crop row.
At Yushen Irrigation, we build PE irrigation pipe extrusion lines that produce this entire hierarchy—from 16 mm flexible lateral tubing to 200 mm pressure-rated HDPE mains. This article is the B2B buyer’s map: what each PE pipe type is, where it belongs in the system, and how to specify it without overpaying for pressure you do not need.

The rule: pressure steps down as diameter steps down.
Material: HDPE PE100 (or PE80 for lower pressure)
Diameter: DN50–DN1200+
Pressure: PN6 / PN8 / PN10 / PN16 (SDR26 / SDR21 / SDR17 / SDR11)
Jointing: Butt fusion, electrofusion, or flanged transition
HDPE is the only correct choice for buried high-pressure mains. It survives ground movement, resists fertilizer and pesticide chemistry, and lasts 50+ years when carbon-black stabilized.
B2B spec checklist:
Confirm PE100 + carbon black masterbatch (UV stable)
Size by flow velocity ≤1.5 m/s
Add surge margin: pump start/stop water hammer
Use SDR11 (PN16) near pump house, SDR17 (PN10) in field trunk
Yushen Irrigation PE pipe lines produce 16–250 mm coiled/sawn HDPE in one synchronized extrusion platform.
Material: HDPE or MDPE
Diameter: 20–90 mm
Pressure: PN4–PN10
Form: Coiled for small bore, cut-length for large bore
Submains sit between the trunk and the crop row. They are usually buried or laid on the surface with UV-stabilized black PE. Manifolds are the last rigid layer before the flexible lateral.
Key buyer note: do not use thin-wall drip tape as a submain. A 0.2 mm tape rated 1 bar will burst at 4 bar. Step down pressure with a regulator before the lateral.
Material: LDPE or LLDPE (linear LDPE)
Diameter: 12 / 16 / 20 / 25 mm
Pressure: PN2–PN4 (≈1–4 bar)
Feature: Soft, kink-resistant, barbed-fitting friendly
This is the pipe that runs down the crop row. LLDPE has better tensile strength and abrasion resistance than standard LDPE, so it is preferred for inline dripper insertion and multi-season orchards.
Typical use:
16 mm LLDPE lateral with 30–40 cm emitter spacing for vegetables
20 mm lateral for orchards, vineyards, nuts
Punch-in button drippers or pre-inserted inline emitters
Yushen lines can run LDPE/LLDPE lateral tubing at high line speed with ±0.02 mm wall control.
Strictly, drip tape is a thin-wall flat product (covered in earlier articles). Round PE emitter tubing is the thicker sibling:
16–20 mm round LDPE with built-in drippers
Pressure 0.5–2.5 bar
Multi-season reuse, PC or non-PC
Use round emitter tubing when:
You need mechanical retrieval
Orchard/vineyard permanent rows
Rodent/UV exposure is high
Use flat drip tape when:
Seasonal row crops, cost per meter is critical
Mulched vegetable beds
Material: Soft PE-reinforced or PVC-coated fabric
Pressure: 2–5 bar
Use: Pump-to-main temporary link, mobile sprinkler, flood irrigation, construction dewatering
Layflat is not a permanent distribution layer. It is the “extension cord” of the farm—cheap, rollable, redeployable. B2B buyers often overlook it, but it is a high-turnover SKU for distributors in rain-fed + supplemental irrigation markets.
SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) = OD ÷ wall thickness
Lower SDR = thicker wall = higher pressure.
PE100 mapping:
SDR26 → PN6 (6 bar)
SDR21 → PN8
SDR17 → PN10
SDR13.6 → PN12.5
SDR11 → PN16
Sizing logic:
1. Calculate total flow (m³/h) per zone
2. Keep velocity <1.5 m/s
3. Pick OD from flow table
4. Pick SDR from max operating pressure + surge
5. Verify fittings (compression for HDPE, barbed for LDPE)
Common mistake: specifying PN16 everywhere. You pay for wall thickness you do not need in low-pressure laterals.

For agricultural distribution, PE100 is the professional default for anything buried and pressurized.
Carbon black ≥2% → UV stable for surface laterals
HDPE resists N, P, K fertilizers, acids used in fertigation
Avoid prolonged chlorine/oxidizer stagnation
Buried HDPE: 50 yr design life (ISO 4427)
Surface LDPE lateral: 3–8 seasons depending on UV dose and handling
Standards to ask suppliers for:
ISO 4427 (PE100 continuous-pressure pipe)
ISO 8779 (irrigation-specific PE pipe)
ISO 9261 (emitters/drip tape)
A complete PE pipe plant from Yushen Irrigation includes:
SJ-75 / SJ-90 single-screw extruder (33:1 or 38:1)
Spiral die head + vacuum calibration sleeve
Multi-zone spray cooling tank
Caterpillar haul-off
Planetary cutter (large bore) or dual-station coiler (small bore)
Laser printer, thickness gauge, QC bench
One line platform switches between:
HDPE pressure pipe (20–250 mm)
LDPE/LLDPE lateral tubing (12–32 mm)
Optional co-extrusion stripe for identification
This lets a factory serve both the infrastructure buyer (mains) and the crop-system buyer (laterals) from one workshop.
Agricultural water distribution is not “one PE pipe.” It is a tiered system:
HDPE PE100 trunk → moves water under pressure, buried, 50-year life
HDPE/MDPE submain → splits the farm into zones
LDPE/LLDPE lateral → flexible row delivery to emitters
Emitter tubing / drip tape → final root-zone discharge
Layflat hose → temporary, movable supply
Specifying correctly means matching material, diameter, SDR, and pressure class to each layer—no over-engineering, no under-rating that bursts in year two.
For B2B buyers, the winning move is to source from a PE pipe machine manufacturer that understands both the hydraulics and the extrusion—so your factory can produce the full hierarchy, not just one SKU.
