How To Read Drip Irrigation Machine Specifications Before Buying?

When a supplier sends a drip tape machine brochure, the first number most buyers notice is “max speed 450 m/min.”​ It looks impressive. Then they order the machine, run it for three weeks, and discover real output is 60–70% of the brochure number.

At Yushen Irrigation​ , we would rather teach a buyer to read the spec sheet correctly than win an inquiry with a misleading peak number. A drip irrigation machine specification is not a slogan—it is a system description. If you understand four groups of numbers—line speed, extrusion capacity, product dimensions, and dripper logic—you can tell a properly engineered line from a marketing poster.

This article is the spec-reading training we give distributors, OEM buyers, and irrigation factory investors before they compare quotes.

1. Line Speed (m/min) Is Not Throughput

“Production speed: 350 m/min” means the line can move tape at 350 meters per minute under ideal conditions. It does not​ mean you will make saleable tape at 350 m/min for 8 hours.

What actually limits speed:

  • Cooling tank length and water temperature

  • Dripper sorting/insertion rate (pieces per minute)

  • Punching synchronization

  • Wall thickness—thicker tape needs more melt and slower cooling

  • Recycled-material ratio—dirty or high-MFI blends destabilize high speed

  • Operator skill and changeover frequency

A useful rule: ask for “stable running speed,” not “design speed.”​ A line rated 450 m/min that reliably runs 300 m/min is better than a “500 m/min” line that jams above 280.

Example:

300 m/min × 60 min × 8 h = 144,000 m theoretical

If stability factor is 0.75 → 108 km/shift real output

2. Extrusion Capacity (kg/h) Must Match Line Speed × Wall Cross-Section

Line speed is length. Extrusion capacity is mass. They are connected by geometry:

Extruder output (kg/h) ≈ tape linear density (g/m) × line speed (m/h) ÷ 1000

A 16 mm tape at 0.2 mm wall weighs roughly 3.0–3.6 g/m.

At 200 m/min = 12,000 m/h → 36–43 kg/h of tape.

Add drippers, edge trim, startup waste, and you often need 50–70 kg/h​ of extruder capacity for that product.

So when you see:

  • SJ-75/33 extruder

  • Max extruding capacity: 160 kg/h

  • Design speed: 370 m/min

…you should immediately ask: “At what wall thickness and dripper spacing does 370 m/min coincide with 160 kg/h?” If the supplier cannot answer, the number is decorative.

Yushen Irrigation always supplies a speed–wall–output matrix​ per machine: e.g. 0.2 mm → 220 m/min @ 120 kg/h; 0.4 mm → 130 m/min @ 135 kg/h; 0.6 mm pipe → 70 m/min @ 150 kg/h.

3. Diameter & Wall Thickness: The Money Specs

Diameter

Common drip tape: 12 / 16 / 20 / 22 / 25 mm.

16 mm = global standard for row crops.

20–25 mm = higher flow, orchards, longer lateral runs.

A line “supports 16–20 mm” is fine. A line “only 16 mm” locks you out of orchard and export greenhouse markets.

Wall thickness

  • 0.15–0.25 mm → seasonal thin-wall tape

  • 0.30–0.40 mm → multi-season medium-wall

  • 0.50–1.20 mm → heavy-wall pipe / SDI / cylindrical dripper pipe

Wall thickness drives three hidden costs:

1. Extruder load​ — double the wall ≈ double the kg/h needed

2. Cooling length​ — thick products need longer tanks or output drops

3. Recyclability & price​ — thin tape is cheap, thick pipe has higher margin but slower turnover

If your target is government tenders, ask whether the machine holds ±0.02 mm​ wall control with gravimetric feeding. If not, you will fail audits.

4. Dripper Spacing, Flow Rate, and Insertion Rate

Buyers often ignore this triangle:

  • Dripper spacing: 100 / 150 / 200 / 300 / 500 / 1000 mm

  • Flow rate: 0.8 / 1.2 / 1.6 / 2.0 / 2.5 L/h

  • Insertion rate: drippers/min

Formula buyers should memorize:

Drippers per minute = line speed (m/min) × 1000 ÷ dripper spacing (mm)

Example:

250 m/min with 300 mm spacing → 833 drippers/min

250 m/min with 200 mm spacing → 1,250 drippers/min

120 m/min with 500 mm spacing → 240 drippers/min

If the machine says “insertion speed 400 pcs/min” but you want 200 mm spacing at 300 m/min (1,500 pcs/min), the inserter is the bottleneck—even if the extruder could go faster.

Also check:

  • Is spacing changed by PLC or by mechanical gear swap?

  • Is punching servo/laser or mechanical?

  • Does the vision system reject missing-emitter sections without stopping the line?

5. Screw, L/D Ratio, and Material Compatibility

Spec sheet line:

Single screw extruder SJ-75/33, 38CrMoAlA screw, 160 kg/h

What it tells you:

  • SJ-75​ = 75 mm screw diameter

  • 33​ = L/D ratio 33:1 (good for virgin + moderate recycled LLDPE/PE)

  • 38CrMoAlA​ = nitrided steel, standard for PE extrusion

  • 160 kg/h​ = max melt capacity, not guaranteed product output

For high recycled content (20–30%), 36:1 helps homogenization but needs better barrel zoning. For 40:1, you need 6–8 heating zones and very good temperature control—otherwise shear heat degrades the resin.

Never accept “can run recycled material” without a written ratio: “up to X% recycled flake, Y% masterbatch, stable at Z m/min.”

6. Installed Power vs Energy per Meter

“Total power 95 kW” does not mean you burn 95 kW continuously. But it tells you the ceiling.

Better metric: kWh per 1,000 m of tape.

A 95 kW line making 120 km/shift = lower kWh/km than a 120 kW line making 80 km/shift. Yushen Irrigation quotes:

  • Thin-wall 16×0.2 mm: ~0.6–0.9 kWh / 1,000 m

  • Medium-wall 16×0.4 mm: ~1.1–1.4 kWh / 1,000 m

  • Round pipe 16×1.0 mm: ~2.0–2.8 kWh / 1,000 m

If a supplier cannot give energy-per-meter, they have not benchmarked the line in production.

7. Roll Length, Winder Type, and Changeover Time

Specs often say:

Roll length 500–2000 m, automatic dual-station winder

That matters more than buyers think:

  • Manual winder → needs 1 extra worker per shift

  • Dual-station turret winder → roll change without stopping line

  • Servo tension control → no telescoping, no slack edges

  • Metering accuracy → ±0.5% roll length = direct margin protection

Also ask: how long to change from 16 mm to 20 mm, or 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm?

A real flexible line: die head + sizing sleeve + guide change in 30–60 min. A rigid line: 3–4 hours.

8. QC Specs: What Separates a Machine from a Factory

Low-end brochures omit these. Professional spec sheets include:

  • Ultrasonic thickness gauge ±0.01 mm

  • CCD/vision: missing emitter, hole offset >0.5 mm

  • Flow-rate test bench (ISO 9261 class)

  • Alarm log / OEE export

  • Gravimetric control (auto-corrects g/m drift)

If the machine has no in-line measurement, you are not buying automation—you are buying a hope.

9. The 5-Number Sanity Check Before You Sign

Before comparing prices, fill this table:

10. Conclusion

Reading a drip irrigation machine specification is not about finding the biggest number. It is about checking whether line speed, extrusion capacity, wall thickness, dripper spacing, and energy use​ form one consistent physical story.

A good buyer asks:

  • “What is stable speed at 0.3 mm wall and 300 mm spacing?”

  • “What extruder output backs that speed?”

  •  “What is the insertion rate at that spacing?”

  • “What is kWh per 1,000 m?”

  • “What happens to wall tolerance after 6 hours of recycled blend?”
